This is a question I ask myself all the time. I am talking about technical books mostly since I have to read immense loads of information at university. After some amount of research on the Internet, I want to share with You some tips I found on the Internet and my own experience of following them in the real life.
- Highlighting crucial information
Unfortunately, to me this does not work. I spend too much time trying to grasp each and every word I meet in the text in order to analyse whether it is something important or not. I need something easier in order to build the whole picture of the chapter spending less time.
- Mind maps
I would not say that I practice this often but to me it is a good way to "build the picture" that I was talking about in the previous part. It is also involves logic and analysis in order to draw some maps which leads to structuring the information you need to memorise in your mind.
- Answering the questions after the chapter
Actually, once I was trying to prepare for my exam by skimming through the chapter and answering those questions. Definitely it was not a good strategy since I lost enough of time by answering the questions that were base on the core topics of the chapters which were pretty easy to memorise but no details were memorised or revised. So this approach obviously lacks details.
- Doing exercises after the chapter
This is better compared to the previous list-item and personally to me more efficient because of hands-on experience but it might take a lot of time and there is a lot of difference between theory and practice still (sometimes I can solve the problem but I do not get the logic behind it and lack theoretical background).
- Sticky notes
Actually, what I really like about this approach is that this really helps. Though, I enjoy the process of creating flash cards very much, I probably lack some time-management skills in order to integrate them into my daily life. There is a lot of ground for improvement.
- Taking notes
Very often my notes are too detailed so they look more like the whole chapter from the book. But when I succeed in being laconic and concise, this approach seems to be very effective.
